Personally working with offices that are electronic vs. paper charting systems is easier and more efficient. It enhances your ability to do research instantly, like look up medications that may interact with one another or look up side effects of medication.A somewhat personal anecdote in one of my other classes there is an OBGYN and she was talking about how her iphone has made her a better doctor. I agree with the comments above that I think the progression of technology will prevail taking over older offices and eventually we will become a paperless medical society. However there is the flip side and I do worry about HIPPA violations and what people will be able to access in your medical records.

  1. Unfortunately whenever we begin to digitalize (is that a word?) information, we run the risk of losing information due to hackers or any type of errors. However, the immense benefits outweigh the negative consequences. It is ridiculous that my doctors do not know what medications I have been on and what I was treated for unless they send in FAXES to offices. Faxes get lost...administration forgets...etc. And, time is money. Our society is far too advanced to not yet have begun utilizing info technology.

Moving over to this type of information will also create many new jobs in the IT industry and will subject workers to new careers. I am looking forward to these changes.

  2. I agree with I think everyone on how medical technology can benefit us greatly and its a surprise that medical records aren't being used yet. So today I was unfortunately in the emergency for food poisoning waaa waaaa but yes medical records would have come in handy when the triage nurse needed to know the name of the medication my primary care doctor gave me yesterday. Instead she asked me to recall the name right as I was about to lose consciousness. Doesn't seem like the best way to get accurate information. Also I would like to thank technology for the blackberry without which I wouldn't have been able to complete this assignment since the thought of moving out of bed makes me want to puke...
