As a physician who has worked in several different health care settings, working at Kaiser with complete electronic medical records was the best experience. I was able to access all of the lab results, medication history and notes from other physicians, which allowed me to understand what was going on with their other medical problems and make the most appropriate decision for the patient. I currently work at LAC+USC where there are 5 different electronic systems that have no connection to each other and for some of the systems, only certain departments have access to. There is also no electronic prescription system...so I just have to either believe the patient or guess what medication they are describing as "green one for my blood pressure." So I know first hand that electronic medical records enhance patient care, but only if it is a comprehensive system like the one at Kaiser (which is the same program as Stanford and multiple other hospital systems.)
